The other day, I went on a business trip to Nagoya for the first time in a while. It was my first time in Nagoya in three months. After quickly finishing my work with the client, of course, the real treat was sake!

I had a remote meeting from evening into the night, so I grabbed a bite to eat and had a meeting at Starbucks Coffee, and finally, it was sake time!
A colleague from the Nagoya office chose a restaurant and made a reservation for me. They took me to a wonderful place!

Fantastic selection of Japanese Sake
From the outside of the restaurant, I had a feeling they would have a delicious selection of sake.

When I was shown inside and saw the sake bottles lined up on the wall, my expectations grew. They even had Hanaabi!

Everyone else started with beer, but of course, I went straight for the sake. Since I had come all the way to Nagoya, I asked the staff for a recommendation and chose a nama sake from the neighboring Gifu prefecture, “Bojimaya.”

All of the dishes were delicious.

The appetizer was a hatahata (sailfin sandfish).
They even provided a grill so you could cook it yourself!
All of the dishes were wonderful…
And of course, I couldn’t miss the mackerel dishes that the restaurant is known for.

The “Nagasaki Herb Saba Goma Saba” is farmed in Nagasaki and fed a diet that includes four types of herbs. Just as the description said, it had absolutely no fishy smell!

The assorted obanzai (traditional Japanese side dishes) were also colorful and delicious.

And for the grand finale, I had the grilled mackerel Sashimi. It was just perfect.
Saba-Specific Sake, SABA de SHU
And the most impressive sake of this visit was this one!
Saba-Specific Sake SABA de SHU (from Yoshi Kubo Brewery in Ibaraki Prefecture)

I had no idea that there was such a thing as sake specifically for mackerel!
It’s made to harmonize with the rich, fatty flavor of mackerel. The moment I took a sip, I exclaimed, “This is amazing!”
t’s a rich, flavorful sake that’s so good, “delicious” just doesn’t quite capture it.
It was a wonderful evening.
There were so many more dishes and sake that I wanted to try, so I will definitely be back!
