A Blossoming Spring Encounter: “Denshu Junmai Ginjo Hyakuyonju Hanaomoi” and the “Hanaomoi” Sake Rice

Sake Brands

“I was at my usual sake shop, you know, the one with the great selection, looking for something new for the week. Wandering around the back cooler, trying to decide what to get, I picked up a bottle of Kagamiyama Omachi. I’d even helped out with the sake making there, so it felt like a good choice.

But then, as I was heading to the counter, something else caught my eye in a different fridge. It was a bottle with this gorgeous label, like it had bottled up the essence of spring! Turns out, it was ‘Denshu Junmai Ginjo Hyakuyonju Hanaomoi’ from Aomori. The label was just stunning, with a slightly deeper pink, like yaezakura cherry blossoms, and traditional Japanese patterns with gold accents. I’d seen it buzzing on X (formerly Twitter), and honestly, I fell in love at first sight.

‘You know, looks really do matter when it comes to sake!’

The label and the whole vibe of the bottle are super important when I’m choosing sake. It was so beautiful, it felt like it was saying, ‘Meeting you was my hope.’

So, of course, I had to try it!

Back home, I poured myself a glass of the ‘Denshu Junmai Ginjo Hyakuyonju Hanaomoi.’ It was so clear, almost like a drop of sunlight in the glass. The aroma was gentle, not a strong fruity punch, but something you could really take your time with.

The taste? Just like the look, it was clean and crisp. But as I savored it, all these complex flavors started to emerge, like acidity and richness, showing different sides of itself, you know, like looking through a kaleidoscope.

And the real star of the show? The ‘Hanaomoi’ sake rice.

What’s ‘Hanaomoi’ Sake Rice?

‘Hanaomoi’ is a special sake rice developed in Aomori in 2002. It’s a cross between Yamada Nishiki and Hana Fubuki, combining the best of both and adapted to Aomori’s climate. The name itself is beautiful, meaning ‘flower thoughts,’ and it’s meant to represent the beautiful seasons of Aomori and the hope that it will ‘blossom’ in sake breweries.

‘Hanaomoi’ Characteristics:

  • Fragrant: A soft, gentle aroma with a clean, elegant taste.
  • Balanced: A mellow, deep flavor with a crisp finish.
  • Versatile: An elegant, calm aroma with a dry, crisp taste.
  • High-Quality Rice: Large grains with a high polishing potential, perfect for daiginjo sake.
  • Top-Notch Quality: Comparable to Yamada Nishiki in overall quality.
  • Tricky to Grow: Requires specific conditions and contract farming due to its delicate nature.

Just like yaezakura cherry blossoms

Just like yaezakura cherry blossoms that get more beautiful with each spring, ‘Hanaomoi’ sake shows a variety of expressions. ‘Denshu Junmai Ginjo Hyakuyonju Hanaomoi’ really highlights the best of this rice, making it perfect for spring. Why not grab a bottle and enjoy a lovely spring moment?”
