Hello everyone! This is Blogger Ai from Sake Days 😊
The other day, on my way back from a business trip to Nagoya, I did it again! Just like last time, my colleague and I held our “Shinkansen Izakaya”! 🚄🍶
Usually, I often check out the sake at Takashimaya in Nagoya Station, but this time I took a little detour to Meitetsu Department Store. I was driven by curiosity, thinking, “Maybe I’ll find a new discovery…!” 💕
Takashimaya has a great selection and is attractive, but Meitetsu Department Store also has a pretty unique lineup! Taking a closer look, there were some brands I hadn’t seen at Takashimaya. It’s a big plus that you can get the famous Aichi sake “Kuheiji” at Takashimaya, but this time I wanted to seek out a different sake encounter.
And, after careful consideration, here’s the sake that captured our hearts this time!
🍶 Born Junmai Daiginjo Tsubaki (Fukui Prefecture)
It’s been a while since I last had “Born”! ✨ I love its fruity and gorgeous aroma, and in the past, I even chose “Born Junmai Daiginjo GOLD” as a gift for an important business partner I used to work with in Australia. I still remember the happy look on their face 😊
The “Tsubaki” we chose this time is a truly luxurious Junmai Daiginjo sake, made by blending sake that has been ice-aged at below 0°C for about a year! The moment you pour it into the glass, a sweet and gorgeous aroma like apples and peaches wafts up… When you take a sip, that aroma further expands, and a broad, mellow flavor spreads through your mouth. It’s truly a captivating sake, perfectly described by the word “Tsubaki” (glossy/lustrous). The fact that it uses Yamada Nishiki rice grown under contract in the special A district of Hyogo Prefecture is another irresistible point for sake lovers, isn’t it?

A colorful assortment of sushi
And this time, we also prepared these as accompaniments for our sake!
Ta-da! A colorful assortment of sushi 🍣✨ And, convinced that it would pair perfectly with sake from the Hokuriku region, we got some firefly squid 🦑, a specialty of Toyama. Once this season arrives, I end up reaching for it almost every week (laughs).

All preparations complete! Finally, our secret izakaya, the “Shinkansen Izakaya,” is open for business! 🍻
In the limited time of about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Nagoya to Tokyo, we enjoyed delicious sake and snacks, and our conversation with my colleague blossomed 🌸 This time too, the two of us finished four go (about 720ml) of sake in no time. Being able to partager (share) delicious food and drinks is such a happy time, isn’t it?
Who knew that travel time on the Shinkansen could turn into such a rich experience! Everyone, please find your favorite sake and snacks and enjoy your own “Shinkansen Izakaya.” I’m sure it will make your trip memories even আরও (more) wonderful!
Well then, cheers to a wonderful sake life for everyone today too! Kampai! 🥂
