Hey everyone, have you seen the movie “Welcome to the Komada Distillery” that’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video?
Today, I want to introduce you to this heartwarming animated film, “Welcome to the Komada Distillery,” which I think is a must-watch for both sake lovers like me and whiskey enthusiasts.
Synopsis
The story is set in a small distillery, the Komada Distillery, located in a local city. The young female president, Ruiko Komada, takes over her late father’s business and aims to rebuild the struggling distillery and revive the phantom whiskey, “KOMA.” Then, a news site reporter, Kotaro Takahashi, who was about to give up on his dreams, visits the distillery for an interview, and the two work together to bring “KOMA” back to life.

Highlights of the Movie
- The depth of whiskey making: The movie carefully depicts the whiskey production process, and you’ll be fascinated by its depth. From the selection of ingredients to distillation and aging, you’ll be moved by the passion and technique put into each step. There are scenes that faithfully recreate actual distilleries, such as the Chichibu Distillery of Venture Whiskey, which produces Ichiro’s Malt. I was so happy to see places I’ve visited appear in an animated work.
- A story of family bonds and rebirth: There’s a past conflict between Ruiko Komada and her family. The way they overcome it and try to regain their family bonds will touch your heart.
- Beautiful visuals and music: The beautiful background art by P.A.WORKS and the moving music by Tatsuya Kato make the story even more impressive.

Why It’s Also Recommended for Sake Lovers
Sake and whiskey have different ingredients and production methods, but both are deeply fascinating drinks born from the blessings of nature and the skills of artisans. Through this movie, you can discover new charms of sake making by experiencing the passion for brewing and the people’s feelings behind it!

My Thoughts
Actually, this is the second time I’ve seen “Welcome to the Komada Distillery.” The first time was on a small monitor on an airplane. Even in that environment, I could enjoy its interesting story and the beauty of its carefully crafted visuals.
However, this second time, my perspective as a viewer was different from the first time, and I became very emotionally invested in the protagonist and her family, who are sake makers.
In a climactic scene in the second half of the story, I couldn’t help but shed tears.

“Welcome to the Komada Distillery” is a moving human drama that anyone can enjoy, even without knowledge of sake. It’s a wonderful film that reminds us of the importance of pursuing our dreams and the bonds with family and friends.
If you love sake, I think you’ll thoroughly enjoy “Welcome to the Komada Distillery.”
Please immerse yourself in the world of sake making.
